Sciforma introduces Incitec with a tool to standardize information and avoid having several versions of software or spreadsheets to organize projects.

About Incitec

Incitec Pivot Ltd. (IPL) is a global diversified industrial chemicals company that leverages its manufacturing excellence and core competencies in nitrogen. This multinational corporation produces the infrastructure, food, clothing, shelter and energy people need every day. IPL manufactures industrial chemicals to produce fertilizers and industrial explosives, and provides mining services.

Now an Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) listed company, IPL had its origins in Europe and North America in the 19th century and Australia early last century. IPL acquired Dyno Nobel in 2008, and is now the largest supplier of industrial explosives and blasting services to the mining, quarrying, seismic and construction industries in North America. Additionally, Incitec Pivot Fertilisers is the largest supplier of fertilizers in Australia, dispatching around two million tons each year for use in the Australian grain, cotton, pasture, dairy, sugar and horticulture industries.

As well as owning and operating 20 plants in the US, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Indonesia and Turkey, IPL has joint venture operations in South Africa, Malaysia, China and Australia. With over nearly 5,000 employees, the company is poised to take advantage of the demand for both hard and soft commodities.

Incitec’s Challenges

Incitec Pivot Ltd. was searching for a solution to better track all of their data in one place, rather than turning to various Excel sheets that were hard to keep track of. The company struggled with unifying and standardizing information and wanted a tool that automated that process.

The IT department used spreadsheets with imported and hand typed Microsoft Project data, but the users wanted one place where everything would be input and managed.

There are 2 main reasons they needed to change:

  • They were missing standardized forms.
  • They needed to control their budget and to identify and track cost savings.

Choosing Sciforma

After searching for a solution, Incitec decided to go with Sciforma for the following reasons:

  • Predefined forms
  • Incredible flexibility
  • Ability to input and track all data in one place

“By using Sciforma we have predefined forms and avoid having 5 different software versions and various Excel sheets floating around. Basically we are avoiding all the cons of using Excel,” states Bret Hutchings, member of the IT department at IPL.

Benefits from implementing Sciforma:

  • Ability to report and make good manager decisions
  • Centralized location for all data and information

He mentions, “Everyone knows the difficulty of getting people to put data into a special project management system. Without having complete and accurate data it’s impossible to analyze project information. Sciforma gave us the opportunity to get the users on board and to put the data into the system.” Implementing Sciforma has helped with the organization’s and the business’s decisions while also getting all users on board for a smooth transition.

Sciforma provides great support

Mr. Hutchings concludes with, “We are very happy about the support we received so far. The Sciforma team knows our business and the biggest thing is that the team is able to advise us about our processes. Sciforma’s team is very informative and knowledgeable. As a bottom line, I want to say that Sciforma is a great tool and is made even better by the people behind the tool.”
