Can you briefly present what you do and what kind of projects you manage?

I am the Engineering Manager. We design mining equipment. We have projects that are fairly small in scope and duration that might take a few weeks to execute to projects that might take a year or longer to execute. We have a variety of projects that we use Sciforma to assist with managing the engineering work.

How did you manage your projects before Sciforma?

Before Sciforma we had a design plan, a spreadsheet, where we listed the things we needed to design and we estimated the hours that were required for the different elements of the design projects. So we basically had a list of things to do and an estimate of how long it would take, but we didn’t have anything that actually kept track of what we had done and where we were in the project. Prior to Sciforma we did not have a project management system. For resource management, it was done on an informal ad hoc basis. The Engineering Manager had an idea where people were but it wasn’t easy to know where the projects were really at.

What made you choose Sciforma?

We looked at 3 different systems and what lead to the decision to go with Scifoma was that it had the features we were looking for and the pricing was quite reasonable. One of the things I really liked about it was the tokens that allowed us to get the best value out of the investment we made.

How did you implement Sciforma within your organization (processes, methods, training, assistance, spread etc.)?

We initially had the software installed, and then we had 2 days of training for the project managers and then a couple days for the administrators.

Which benefits can you observe? Which results did you get?

We are able to track time spent on projects – I like the timesheet element in Sciforma. We are better at planning resources and estimating project duration.

Do you see a return on your investment with Sciforma (ROI)?

I believe we are getting good value; it’s hard to provide metrics as to before and now.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We would be getting more value if we had been able to implement project management training here too. The industry has been slow so it’s been difficult to invest in training. The people using it would benefit from PM training as well to be able to manage projects better.
