By implementing Sciforma , EADS is consolidating R&D roadmaps into one progress report that helps management team in their decision-making

About EADS

EADS - European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company NV- was the name of Airbus Group SE prior to 2014. Airbus Group SE is a European multinational Aerospace_manufacturer corporation. Headquartered in Leiden, Netherlands, the group consists of the three business divisions Airbus, Airbus Defence and Space, and Airbus_Helicopters. The company was originally formed as the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) on 10 July 2000 by the merger of Aerospatiale-Matra, DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG (DASA), and Construcciones Aeronáuticas SA (CASA. In January 2014, EADS was reorganized as Airbus Group NV, combining the divisions for development and marketing of civil and military aircraft, as well as communications systems, missiles, space rockets, helicopters, satellites, and related systems.

The solution: Sciforma, one platform for centralizing data

"Currently, we are managing about 200 projects. A project in EADS terms is a research activity. Research activities have varying importance depending on the budget assigned to them. These activities are grouped according to a number of criteria, be they technological or team, business or objective related.  The projects are no more or less than a view of the research activity. With regards to Portfolio Management, our projects are in fact referred to as “road maps”. This is a set of activities that contribute to reaching a certain level of technological growth in a particular area. The “road map” format provides us with enough detail for communicating between research teams and the management team who use progress reports to make decisions"

Our Program Management team is composed of seven Program Managers for 200 “road maps” divided into 24 sub-projects. Sciforma currently centralizes these 200 road maps.

“Personally and technically speaking, I think that the Sciforma solution truly meets our requirements”.

Specifically speaking, at the portfolio management level, we work with a process which on the one hand, is based on Sciforma and the use of an e-room to exchange information and on the other hand, our reports. Sciforma is used for progress reports and information feedback while the e-room provides an overall view of the road maps and allows us to share data between different EADS innovation sites. To sum up, on the one hand we have our Sciforma tool which is used by the Program Management team consisting of about ten people and which manages the fundamental elements of our research activity.  On the other, we have our e-room which makes it possible for EADS’ Work innovation structures to access Portfolio Management information.

Quick User adoption

A solution based on the user profiles - As an IT specialist, I’m used to assessing software on paper first. This is what I did with Sciforma before designing prototypes myself. While I was teaching myself, I asked the Sciforma team to go into some areas in more detail. Since this project management solution had to be accessible to any member of the team, I based it on a user profile with a basic knowledge of Excel to create an easy, user-friendly prototype. Once this initial work had been carried out, the other Program Managers grasped it very easily.
Simple to configure- Quick to implement -When I was making my first prototype, I was conscious that I wasn’t using Sciforma’s full potential but I knew that it would be easier for me to exploit it in more detail at a future stage. To get the best use out of this type of tool it’s essential to centralize data, which often comes from several sources. It is not always easy to obtain this type of centralization but Sciforma is a simple tool to configure and its implementation was facilitated by the fact that the prototype was really adapted to our everyday requirements.

Benefits: Reduced time spent on project reporting

At the beginning of the “production phase”, we made several changes to our reports.  This has now stabilized because our requirements remain fairly constant. Also, we always knew how to keep one step ahead of specific requests in the reporting module either natively or by adding a small adjustment.
Today we are able to quickly provide the requested reports, the response time being a key element.
